A-level Physics: how to actually read the question
A large share of dropped Physics marks come from misreading the question, not misunderstanding the physics. That is a fixable and high-value problem.
Ask a Physics teacher where students lose marks and you will rarely hear "they do not understand the physics". Far more often it is that they misread the question, missed a piece of given information, or answered a subtly different question from the one asked. This is oddly encouraging, because reading a question properly is a skill you can train, and it pays off across every topic at once.
The information given is a set of instructions
Every number in a Physics question is there for a reason, and the reason is usually a signal about which equation or approach the examiner expects. When a question specifies that a surface is frictionless, or that a process is adiabatic, or gives you a value you do not immediately see how to use, it is telling you something about the method. Students who skim past these details end up solving a harder or different problem than the one set. Read the question as a list of constraints, each one narrowing what you are being asked to do.
Watch the units and the quantities
A large fraction of avoidable errors are unit errors: a distance given in centimetres used as though it were metres, a time in milliseconds treated as seconds. Converting everything to base SI units before you start is a small habit that prevents a whole category of mistakes. Checking that your final answer has sensible units, and a sensible order of magnitude, catches errors before they cost you.
Show the reasoning, structure the working
As with Maths, method marks are real and generous. Set out what you know, the equation you are using, and each step of substitution and rearrangement clearly. Compressed working that jumps to an answer forfeits marks when a small slip appears, because the examiner cannot award credit for reasoning they cannot see. Clear working is not slower, and it protects the marks you have earned.
The pattern is consistent. Strong Physics candidates are not always the ones who understand the concepts most deeply. Often they are the ones who read carefully, work in a disciplined way, and check.
